Village Living for Adults with Disabilities

The Nebraska Village of Promise presents a vision for a pleasant, residential community in the Omaha area for developmentally disabled adults. Nebraska Village of Promise envisions a residential community enhanced with opportunities for recreation, learning, and, eventually, employment. The purpose of the Village will be to provide an additional residential choice for area families facing the question of long-term care for developmentally challenged adult children.

Nebraska Village of Promise is one solution, but by no means the only solution. It is one choice, one new alternative which has not been available to families in this area. It will not replace the need for other programs or government initiatives. It will focus energies of interested people in developing alternative ways to collaborate in the care of individuals with special needs.

The Nebraska Village of Promise will initially include duplexes or townhomes providing comfortable housing for 20 residents. Homes will be single-story, and will include separate bedrooms for each resident as well as a common area with kitchen, dining area, living room and storage facilities. Each housing unit will be staffed with professionally trained Village employees, with a staff member available whenever a resident is in the home. In subsequent years additional facilities will be constructed to provide homes and residential and recreational services for 80 or more individuals.

The property on which homes will be located will be 40 acres or more, and will include facilities for recreation and education. Through collaboration with other organizations, Nebraska Village of Promise hopes to eventually provide on-campus employment opportunities. The Greater Omaha community will be welcomed to access Village programs and facilities. Other non-profit organizations and providers will have opportunities to develop programs or facilities on the campus. The site of Nebraska Village of Promise will be convenient for public and private transportation, and will offer easy access to healthcare services, entertainment and employment.

The Nebraska Village of Promise is a Nebraska not-for-profit organization. Volunteers are needed and welcomed. Much of our dream rests on the generosity of private citizens, corporations and foundations. We welcome contributions of time, philosophical support, organizational resources and experience, and financial contributions.
